The Thaqeef tribe
Location: Taif, Hijaz, Western Region
Several Hijazi tribes live in Wadi Mahram close to Taif, where the pilgrims from Yemen stop to change into their pilgrimage clothing, or "ihram", before journeying on to Makkah. The tribes include the Thaqeef, Bani Sa'd and Bani Malik.
The tribespeople of Wadi Mahram, separated by only a few kilometres, wear similar dress but with details that distinguish each branch of the tribe from the others.
Thaqeef mubaqar thobe from the Shafa area is sewn together in alternating bands. The yoke and sleeve cuffs are embroidered with white and red cotton thread whereas the hem decoration is appliqué.
